Old photo restoration works on the digital copy of a print. Different kinds of wear need different care; start with the clearest scan you have.
Faded contrast & uneven tones
Lift a washed-out scan so people and surroundings are easier to see. Keep the original black-and-white or sepia character instead of turning every old photo into a modern portrait.
Keep an unedited scan alongside the result.
Soft faces & grainy details
Restoration can make a soft portrait easier to read, but AI may interpret an unclear eye, smile, or strand of hair. Check recognizable features rather than choosing the smoothest-looking version.
Clearer detail is not proof of historical accuracy.
Tears & missing edges
Small damaged areas may be filled using nearby shapes and tones. Large missing faces, writing, or important objects cannot be reliably recovered from a single photo.

Prepare your old photo for a better restoration.
You do not need to alter the physical photograph. A cleaner input gives the model more visible detail to work with.

- Keep the print flat and scan at a resolution that captures its visible detail. Save an untouched master file before making repairs.
- Using a phone? Avoid glare
- Photograph the print straight on in even light. Keep reflections, shadows, and fingers away from the image; crop away the surrounding table.
- Preserve the original tones
- Restoration and colorization are different edits. If the photo is black and white or sepia, say so in your instructions and check that the result keeps that character.
Keep the people you recognize.
The most polished result is not always the most faithful one. AI reconstructs uncertain detail; it cannot know what was originally hidden by a scratch or a missing piece.
- Compare eyes, mouth, facial shape, and expression.
- Check clothes, handwriting, and small background objects.
- Keep the original scan for family or historical reference.
For irreplaceable records or badly damaged faces, use the AI version as a draft and consider manual restoration.
What happens to your family photos?
Your images are stored privately for processing. They are sent to our image-processing provider through KIE; processing does not happen entirely on your device.

- Enpix does not publish your uploads in a public gallery or use them to train its own models. Provider handling follows their separate policies.
- 7-day access
- Submitted originals, results, and related task data are available for 7 days from task creation. Scheduled cleanup removes expired files; unused uploads are scheduled for removal after 24 hours.
- Save what matters
- Download a copy before access expires. Signed-in task history helps you find recent results, but it is not a permanent photo archive.
